Wintry Joy

A walk in the wood

blanketed with pristine white snow on this sunny blue sky

is magical and sheer wintry joy.

You will show me the path of life;
In Your presence is fullness of joy;
At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
Psalm 16:11

Beauty in White

Fresh snow falling bountifully from the sky

and dazzles the park with beauty in white

Young and old, as well as animals, reveling in this snowy delight

One snowy scripture verse brings to mind as I step into this enchanting white trail…

“Come now, let us settle the matter,”   says the Lord.

“Though your sins are like scarlet,  they shall be as white as snow;

though they are red as crimson,  they shall be like wool. (Isaiah 1:18)

It was a foggy day and I looked forward to enjoy a cool and misty stroll up the mountain.

The sunset above the cloud was glowing with delight;

and the thick blanket of fog that covered the city skylines looked like a fairyland.

Renewed Strength

The morning sun is shining, the fresh snow is falling, and the mountains are calling…

for me to come and enjoy their snowy splendid.

img_6145

As I am huffing and puffing up the snow trail, I grow exhausted and have to stop every so often to rest, and to contemplate whether to go higher or to turn back down.

img_6181

After a sip of drink and some tasty snack, I look around and in awe once again by the magnificent white, my strength is renewed and I am able to march upward.

As I am climbing, suddenly, the well-known verses from Isaiah 40 come to mind:

He giveth power to the faint;
and to them that have no might he increaseth strength.
Even the youths shall faint and be weary,
and the young men shall utterly fall:
But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength;
they shall mount up with wings as eagles;
they shall run, and not be weary;
and they shall walk, and not faint.
(Isaiah 40:29-31)

Oftentimes, when I think of these verses, I think I would only experience this renewal when I grow older.

But today while grinding up the slope, I suddenly have this spiritual epiphany and could totally relate to the rich meaning of these Isaiah verses.

Just like how I need rest and food to renew my energy hiking up mountains,
I also need to rest and wait on the Lord to nurture me and renewed my strength when I am weary, so I can soar again and again.

Prayer Blankie

At the Children Prayer Retreat (CPR), we provided each child with a piece of homemade cloth, the size of a beach towel, for them to use as their “prayer blankie” or “magic carpet”.

The prayer blankie creates a boundary as well as a sacred space for the children to ponder about God.

The kids really liked this calming and unhurried pace of reflecting on God as they enjoyed their sweet time on the blankie writing prayer journal,reading prayer books, and drawing for God.

CPR2018-37

After the 3-day retreat, and when it’s time to collect the blankies, the kids pleaded to let them keep the blankie for they grew quite attached to it.

Normally we don’t let children bring the blankies home as we usually save it for future use; but seeing the eagerness of the children wanting to use it as for prayers, we gladly let them keep it.

Although there is no magic in this piece of cloth, we know this miracle carpet is a good tool for children to enhance their prayer life; and to experience God who is the miracle maker in our daily lives.

Gingerbread Gospel

Gingerbread Village at the Grouse Mountain!

It is well known that the concept of the gingerbread house originated from the sugar candy cottage in the Hansel and Gretel fable.

However, I had never heard about the Gingerbread Gospel until I was asked to be the judge for the best gingerbread decorating contest in one of the Sunday School classes.

When the children were decorating their fantasy dream snow cottage with lots of icing and candies, their teachers led them to reflect on the special homes of King Jesus:

DSCN2990

Heaven: Jesus’s first home, and what a perfect home.
Hut: Jesus’s earthly home in the stable.
Heart: Jesus longs to dwell in our hearts & to have a personal relationship with us.

What a delightful and creative  approach to decorate the sugar candy cottage and be reminded of  the assurance of heaven and spending eternity with Jesus.

Be near me, Lord Jesus, I ask Thee to stay;
Close by me forever, and love me, I pray.
Bless all the dear children in thy tender care;
And take us to heaven, to live with Thee there.

A friend of mine was preaching the past Sunday and illustrated on the sweet family time together building the gingerbread house… reflecting on how our Heavenly Father intends to have a relationship with us in everything we do, although we claim that we are the ones that are doing the work, in fact it’s Father God who does it.

Later, his friend used the picture and sketched the following cute picture of daddy & his two dolls decorating the sugar candy cottage!!
