Gingerbread Gospel

Gingerbread Village at the Grouse Mountain!

It is well known that the concept of the gingerbread house originated from the sugar candy cottage in the Hansel and Gretel fable.

However, I had never heard about the Gingerbread Gospel until I was asked to be the judge for the best gingerbread decorating contest in one of the Sunday School classes.

When the children were decorating their fantasy dream snow cottage with lots of icing and candies, their teachers led them to reflect on the special homes of King Jesus:

Heaven: Jesus’s first home, and what a perfect home.
Hut: Jesus’s earthly home in the stable.
Heart: Jesus longs to dwell in our hearts & to have a personal relationship with us.

What a delightful and creative  approach to decorate the sugar candy cottage and be reminded of  the assurance of heaven and spending eternity with Jesus.

Let’s celebrate!

Be near me, Lord Jesus, I ask Thee to stay;
Close by me forever, and love me, I pray.
Bless all the dear children in thy tender care;
And take us to heaven, to live with Thee there.

A friend of mine was preaching the past Sunday and illustrated on the sweet family time together building the gingerbread house… reflecting on how our Heavenly Father intends to have a relationship with us in everything we do, although we claim that we are the ones that are doing the work, in fact it’s Father God who does it.

Later, his friend used the picture and sketched the following cute picture of daddy & his two dolls decorating the sugar candy cottage!!

First snowfall of the season!

Thank you God for the salvation that transforms life (Isaiah 61):

from ashes to crown of beauty

from mourning to oil of gladness

from despair to garment of praise

Above the clouds

No, I am not up in the air yet…

but this bird’s eye view scene of downtown high-rise
floating on the cloud sure looks like
I was way way up there ;p

I remember last time before I took off on a plane,

I went chasing after falling leaves.

This time ’round I ventured into a field of white fluffy shimmering snow!

It was a dense foggy day in the valley,

but while driving up the winding mountain pass through the milky mist,

we were greeted with this spectacular sunny view sparkling with crystal snow diamonds!

and I finally experience the Chinese lyric “雲上太陽” – “The Sun Above the Clouds” –

“It doesn’t matter whether we dwell on a beautiful and majestic mountain

or in the deep valley of the shadows of doubt and darkness

but when we lift up our eyes to the sky,

we can experience the Lord’s presence with us while

He is preparing a way and providing for us.

For the Lord, who is the SUN above the clouds, is faithful and unchanging!”

Silence in the air…

Every so often I like to go to this faraway land

Home…  away from home

to feel the sound of silence

and to do the ritual of igniting the firewood and gazing by the fireplace…

Happy Epiphany Sunday!

A Walk in the Snow

It was a good day
perfect day

to drive up the mountain highway…

and to go for a stroll in the snow!

The trail we explored is called Dog mountain.

I’wonder if the mountain was shaped like a dog… thus the name.

Or perhaps this snow mountain is the only playground where dogs could roam freely during the winter season, hence Dog mountain ;p

Just today alone, we’ve encountered at least 40 plus small and huge doggies hiking up and down the snow trail with their masters.

It’s fun to walk in the snow.

and I wonder how it would be like…

to walk on a cloud?

All these walk talks bring to mind Psalm 16:11:

You will show me the path of life;
In Your presence is fullness of joy;
At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore!

Heard that tomorrow’s gonna be another awesome day for snow fun.

Guess it’s time to bundle up again and venture out for yet another strenuous exercise in the snow!

Heaps of Fun!

I haven’t seen my little friend for a while and she has grown to become so chatty !

We skyped  the other day, the minute she saw me on the screen, she raised her hands up, squealed with glee and exclaimed: “It’s Janie!  It’s snowing!”

I giggled so much at her wit & adorable-ness!

The reason she associates me with snow was because a couple of months ago while visiting here, we went up to the snow mountain together.

It happened to snow  heavily on that day and my little buddy was elated to see snow for the very first time and had a blast playing on those heaps of snow with her family and aunties.

I wonder if this little cutie likes to join me next time…

for this snow adventure!

Yup, it’s snow camping!

& heaps of fun!

Easy breezy…

While cleaning the shelf, I came across this notebook. No, it was not a record of my ballet lesson but were anecdotes of my snowboarding experiences.

I used to consider snowboarding an extreme sport which I would never have attempted.
But a few die-hard snowboarding buddies kept nudging me on… they said once you get the hang of it, it’s pretty easy breezy.

There are many fun aspects to snowboarding especially when one is cruising down the slope with avid snowboarders.

As I flipped through the pages of the notebook, I noticed there weren’t much about the trials and errors of my snowboarding experiences ala tumbling down the slope and crushing myself badly.

Instead they were filled with statements like…

– wow, it’s calender-perfect scenery, breathtaking…

– the majestic, grandeur and handiwork of God is just so amazing

– hush, I could hear the sound of silence

– oh my, what a wilderness experiences I have had

– I felt like I’m soaring like an eagle

– lively weather… chilling air & feather-liked snow blowing on my face

– the solitude on top of the snow-capped mountain is sacred

– at times, on the drive up the slippery mountain road encountering misty and foggy weather with limited visibility, I could feel like how Moese felt on Mount Sinai, being emcompassed by the glory and the presence of God!

In the notebook, I even journaled that I brought my late mom up the snow mountain… she was’t snowboarding of course ;p for while I hit the slope, mom stayed in the toasty cafeteria knitting away.

Snowboarding has definitely brought me much courage and determination.

Yes, once you get the hang of it, it’s easy breezy all the way!

Eric Liddell states: … When I run, I feel the pleasure of God.

And yes, that is exactly how I feel —
When I glide down the snowy slope, I do feel the pleasure of God!
